Night of the Dead

Candlelit vigils on Lake Pátzcuaro and altars across Morelia's Historic Center.

About this experience

Night of the Dead

Michoacán's celebration of the dead is one of the most authentic in Mexico. On the night of November 1st, families row to the island of Janitzio on Lake Pátzcuaro and keep vigil by candlelight in the cemetery.

Morelia itself fills with marigold-covered altars, comparsas and pan de muerto stands. Many museums stay open late with free programming.

Insider tips

  • Bring a warm jacket — November nights at Lake Pátzcuaro get cold.
  • Hire a local guide for Janitzio; the boat queues are long without one.
