Monarch Butterfly Migration

Millions of monarchs arrive each winter to the fir forests of Michoacán.

About this experience

Monarch Butterfly Migration

After flying more than 4,000 km from Canada and the United States, the monarch butterflies cluster on the oyamel firs of the Sierra Chincua and El Rosario sanctuaries. The branches bend under their weight and the air fills with the sound of millions of wings.

The sanctuaries are about 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Morelia. We can help arrange a guided day trip with a local cooperative.

Insider tips

  • Visit between 11 am and 2 pm on a sunny day — that's when butterflies fly the most.
  • Wear hiking shoes and bring water; the trails climb to 3,000 m altitude.
